ustry (declining the award on each occasion) Paul Smith fuses the heritage of Saville Row and Jermyn Street with an English eccentricity. From its beginnings in 1970 as a one-shop enterprise in Smiths native Nottingham, the Paul Smith label has been developed by Smith and his partner Pauline Denyer into a global empire. In an extension to a range which includes childrens wear, spectacles, toiletries, bags and watches, in 1993 he launched the Paul Smith Women collection, evincing the same individualist synthesis of wit and classicism for which his mens clothing is noted. Smith has received numerous awards, including a CBE for services to fashion design, and in 1995 the Design Museum staged Paul Smith True Brit, the first major exhibition the museum had devoted to a single fashion designer. In this lecture he discusses his design philosophy. Lecture introduced by Piers Gough.
