The Architecture of Transit & No Buddha in Suburbia

In “No Buddha in Suburbia” Peter Bialobrzeski returns to Asia, for his new photographical case study in urbanism and humanity. After his last major series “Die zweite Heimat” on his native Germany he followed an invitation of the Goethe Institute to Mumbai. Mumbai’s Suburbia counts as one of the largest urban sprawls on the planet and in contrary to the western notion of the word, it is a dystopian environment. The overpopulated streets are lined with an eclectic mix of derelict buildings, high rises, slums and huge billboards. The population density is 22.000 people/km²! In the pictures for this series Peter Bialobrzeski tries to condense these highly intense and complex impressions in impressive tableaus that are presented in this publication for the first time.
Peter Bialobrzeskis work has been exhibited in Europe, USA, Asia, Africa and Australia. He has won several awards including the prestigious World Press Photo Award 2003 and 2010. Motorways are architectural megastructures in the landscape, crossing nations, natural or political borders, and making previously remote places accessible to development. Between the Alps and Naples motorways connect highly complex topographies and urban conditions, often retracing antique trade paths and routes taken by northern Romantics on the Grand Tour, searching for arcadian and sublime landscapes. The experience of the sublime in untamed nature became a highlight on the Grand Tour. In those days the journey took days; today we speed through the landscapes via motorways over concrete bridges, ramps, through galleries and tunnels. But with this speed comes a new accelerated and simultaneously calm sublime of concrete motorway megastructures.
Sue Barr, Head of Photography at the Architectural Association (AA), London, is a photographer obsessed by concrete and Brutalist architecture. On countless journeys from the Alps to Naples she took the carefully constructed pictures for her first monographic publication and documented the ominious beauty of motorway architecture, within landscapes and urban spaces.
