
In 2019, about 300 biennales will open globally. That is more biennales than there are countries. In 2019, there will be 55,000 museums worldwide. That is 3 times more museums than hospitals. In 2019, art and culture will contribute 4,3% to the GDP of the United States. That is more than agriculture and transport combined.
Art must be doing something right, but what exactly? More importantly, what do we want art to be doing?
This lecture by Vere van Gool will chronicle a short history of Institutional Critique alongside an overview of her most recent curatorial projects— a geography of video art in Lower Manhattan, a forum for ideas at the New Museum in New York, a roaming radio laboratory in Detroit, Athens, and Arles, a self-built sauna in Chinatown, a residency program in Singapore, and work from her time at Forensic Architecture and as a student at the Architectural Association
Vere van Gool is a curator and writer based in New York. She is the Associate Director of IdeasCity at the New Museum in New York. Vere’s writing has been featured in BOMB Magazine, e-flux, PIN UP Magazine, and Vogue. She has presented her work at the Gwangju Biennale, Harvard University, Het Nieuwe Instituut, Matadero Madrid and Storefront for Art and Architecture.
