The work of Dixon Jones over the last ten years has involved a mixture of arts, university and retail buildings, equally balanced between new construction and renovation. This lecture focuses on their reinvigoration of four national cultural institutions located within a five-minute walk of their Covent Garden office. The projects vary in scale, from the reconstruction of an entire city block in Covent Garden for the Royal Opera House, to the development of a masterplan for the National Gallery set within the World Squares project, to the transformation of a rear yard for the National Gallery, and the addition of a bridge, dining terrace and fountains for Somerset House. Although the relationship between these various institutions is quite arbitrary, when taken together they represent a huge improvement to the public life of London. Jeremy Dixon and Edward Jones were both students at the AA, graduating in 1964 and 1963 respectively.NB: Cuts out during Q & A.
