This lecture projects towards an urban future in which the intelligence of how cities are conceived, the design methods by which they are designed, how their forms are expressed and, how they behave, is presented across various projects and platforms of research.
Tom Verebes is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Professor, in the School of Architecture and Design at New York Institute of Technology NYIT. He is the Director of his practice, OCEAN CN Limited, based in Hong Kong and New York. For twelve consecutive years (2007-2018), he has directed the AA Shanghai Summer School, as well as AAVS Xixinan (2017), and AAVS Shenzhen (2018). His former academic roles include: Associate Dean for Teaching & Learning (2011-2014), and Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong (2009-2016); Co-Director of the Design Research Lab at the AA in London, where he had taught from 1996 to 2009; and most recently as Provost of Turenscape Academy (2016-2018). Verebes was Guest Professor at Akademie der Buildenden Künste ABK Stuttgart (2004-2006), and he has held Visiting Professor roles at University of Pennsylvania, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Syracuse University, RMIT, Singapore University of Technology & Design SUTD and University of Tokyo. Verebes studied architecture at McGill University (Canada), LoPSiA (France), and at the Architectural Association (AA) in London, and he received his PhD from RMIT (Australia). He has published over 150 books, articles and project features, and his design work and teaching output has been exhibited in over 50 venues worldwide, and he has lectured extensively in Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, Africa and the Middle East.
