Today the Lecture Hall, Library and Gallery sit among robotic arms, digital prototyping equipment, extensive research archives, audio-visual facilities, workshops, studio spaces and the AA bar, all of which connect with the workshop, fabrication areas and accommodation at Hooke Park. These resources are constantly evolving to reflect the requirements of the highest quality of contemporary architectural education, and the constant interaction between these varied components of the school embodies the intimate and interdisciplinary atmosphere that permeates all of the activities of the AA.
Advanced robotic arms stand ready for operation in a high-tech manufacturing or research environment. The Digital Prototyping Lab (DPL) is a state-of-the-art model-making facility, manufacturing laboratory and fabrication hub. It is housed in the lower ground floor of the school’s London campus and stretches across 36 to 39 Bedford Square. The DPL’s aim is to assist teaching and learning across school programmes.
It is equipped with filament (FFF), resin (SLA) and nylon powder (SLS) 3D printers; laser-cutters; 3-axis CNC milling machines; a high-specification 3D object scanner; and two industrial robotic arms.
Access
All equipment in the DPL is available to current students and staff upon completion of the DPL online induction and health and safety test at the beginning of each academic year. All information regarding the online induction, machine bookings and equipment can be found on the DPL Intranet page.
