From 1932 the Malayan Public Works Service was based in Singapore, with two main sections, under the Director of Works, Straits Settlements, and the Malay State Works Advisor. In 1946, following the end of the Second World War, the Public Works Service was reorganised with the establishment of the Federation of Malaya, Singapore also establishing its own Public Works Department.
