From 1932 the Malayan Public Works Service was based in Singapore, with two main sections, under the Director of Works, Straits Settlements, and the Malay State Works Advisor. In 1946, following the end of the Second World War and the establishment of the Federation of Malaya, the Public Works Service was reorganised, with Singapore establishing its own Public Works Department. On Singapore gaining independence in 1965, their Public Works Department came under the control of the Ministry of Law and National Development. It was corporatised in 1999.
