In the late 1960’s GianPaolo Maffioletti worked in Milan at the BBPR Studio, before enrolling as a post-graduate student at the Architectural Association, London, where he attended at the Department of Planning and Urban Design and is recorded as receiving a post-graduate Diploma from the AA Department of Tropical Architecture(1969-70). On graduation, he worked in Ghana, Tanzania and Canada, before returning to Milan and founding the practice, Piani e Progetti Architetti in 1972, developing a number of socio-economic and urban plans for the Istituto Lombardo di Studi Economici e Sociali (ISES) and the Istituto Regionale di Ricerca della Lombardia (IRER), working with the economist Carlo Ricciardi. The studio was also responsible for a number of significant infrastructure projects and contributed significantly in the field of public projects including the design of community spaces, schools and low-cost housing.
