AA alum Asif Khan is featured in the Financial Times this week, in an article written by Edwin Heathcote, titled Dry dock, Soviet cinema, meat market – is there anything architect Asif Khan can’t transform?
The article opens with a conversation between Khan and Heathcote as they approach London’s Canada Dock, where a new pedestrian boardwalk designed by Khan now connects the area’s timber trade history amid the dock’s radical transformation. Heathcote writes:
‘We are looking at a lipstick-red bridge that appears to meander across a dock that looks very different to the days when it was rammed with ships from across the Atlantic … The bridge is terrific, a vivid slash of complex carpentry made to appear elegantly simple’.
This project comes at a time when Khan is also working on Canning Dock in Liverpool with the US artist Theaster Gates, to design a ‘“place of contemplation” to invite relfection on the slave trade’ that once populated Liverpool’s waterfront.
