AA alum and photographer Quintin Lake has authored the book, The Perimeter, published by Penguin (2025). The book is a photographic documentation of the British coast from a five year 11,000km walk. Lake walked this distance in 454 days with an aim to produce a body of photographic work that ‘gets under the surface of the island nation that we call home’.
The publication is carefully curated with over 1,200 photos which are interspersed with stories from Lake’s adventures. It takes the reader through charming seaside towns such as Staithes in Yorkshire, the desert landscape of Dungeness in Kent and the desolation of Scotland’s Knoydart Peninsula. The images explore the contrast between industry and nature along the Welsh coastal path, where plumes of steam rising from the Port Talbot steelworks are just as captivating as the Worm’s Head on the Gower Peninsula. Lake narrates the challenges of wild camping, battling with midges and stress fractures as well as climbing cliffs to escape a rising tide.
Lake is an award-winning photographer specialising in landscape and architecture with 25 years of experience. A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Society of Arts, his work has been featured in leading publications such as National Geographic Traveler, the Guardian, and Der Spiegel. In 2020, he was named The Great Outdoors’ Outdoor Personality of the Year. He lives in Cheltenham with his family.
