AA alumna Shaha Raphael, who graduated from the Diploma Programme in 2021, has been announced as the winner of the EU Mies Award for Young Talent in Architecture Open 2023. Shaha was awarded for her DIP17 project OPEN: Earth Bound – Terre d’Origine, for which she received Diploma Honours at the AA in 2021. The project proposes a collective ground in Lebanon that is designed to be accessible to all inhabitants and takes a hyper-local approach to material resources and construction processes. The EU Mies Awards jury praised the brilliance and maturity of the project, noting its sensitivity to vernacular construction techniques in the territory it is sited within, and recognising her profound understanding of the geological landscape of the area.
