AA alumna Youngbin Shin has been Highly Commended in the Environmental Award within the Archisource Drawing of the Year Awards 2022 for her drawing titled ‘A New Mt Everest Habitat’. The Archisource Drawing of the Year 2022 award scheme, currently in its fourth year, celebrates the best imagery created by professionals and students around the world.
Youngbin described the drawing, which was created for her Diploma 8 project in 2020: ‘The project proposes a shelter as a new type of social space to replace traditional tents at Mount Everest, which seeks to improve the lives of locals by using natural materials within the building envelope, to close the cycle of production of camping equipment waste. Mount Everest and nearby villages experience significant environmental stress as a result of hiking tourism, and the project responds to these issues by creating structures for local communities using indigenous materials and engaging them to self-build a new Everest habitat.’
