James Mak and Jongwon Na, 2017 Diploma graduates, have been commissioned by Yeonsu-gu to build the Yeonsu-gu Centre in South Korea following their success in the commissioner’s design competition earlier this year.
Mak and Na’s intends the space to encourages the young to act through the processes of practice, performance, involvement and discussion. The 8000sqm community centre will accommodate a variety of learning spaces, a performative atrium space, indoor swimming pool, multipurpose sports hall and auditorium.
The pair commented on their recent commission:
‘As young architects, being selected to design a project with such an ambitious brief and scale has been a real challenge and honour. We will be collaborating with local architects in Korea to deliver the project until its completion in 2025. We would like to thank all our tutors and members of the community that have supported us along the way.’
