Congratulations to AA alumni Patty Hopkins, Audley English and Richard Kroeker, who have all been awarded in New Year Honours ceremonies.
Architect and co-founder of Hopkins Architects, Patty Hopkins, graduated from the AA in 1968 and served on AA Council from 2014–18. Patty was made OBE at King Charles III's 2024 New Year Honours ceremony for her services to architecture. This award follows the 1994 Royal Gold Medal for Architecture, which Patty received prior to becoming an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) in 1996 and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1997.
Audley English graduated from the AA in 1983 to become the UK’s first West Indian architect and is co-founder of the Society of Black Architects. Audley was made MBE at King Charles III's 2024 New Year Honours ceremony for his services to architecture and sustainability. The Society of Black Architects prompted the first use of construction management contracts for social housing and pioneered modular housing design with its 2000 Newham scheme.
Richard Kroeker was inducted into the Order of Canada in the 2023 Canadian New Year’s honour list. Richard was awarded for ‘his innovative leadership as one of Canada’s leading architects who uses multiple perspectives of Indigenous and Western artistic and environmental models in his work.’ Richard’s work draws on the direct design responses of indigenous cultures to natural and cultural forces.
