Italian sculptor and architect Umberto Bellardi Ricci, an AA alumnus and former tutor who previously co-directed the AA Visiting School Las Pozas in Mexico, is the subject of a profile feature in the New York Times which coincides with his solo exhibition of sculptures and lighting, Dawn, currently on view at Matter in New York City.
The feature, written by Kate Branch, charts the development of Ricci’s career and notes his experience at the AA – as both a student and a tutor – as formative within the trajectory of his practice. Reflecting on the formal language and material palette evident within Ricci’s work, Branch notes: ‘The beauty of these structures, beyond their subtle shapes and earthy palettes and textures, is that they are formed from building materials that have been used not only in New York but around the world for centuries.’
