AA alumnus Russell Royer (AADipl(Hons) 2020) has launched One To One Thousand, a community interest company which seeks to improve representation of minority groups in architectural visualisations. The endeavour began in 2019, when Russell was a student at the AA and produced a study of architectural visualisations produced by top firms, highlighting the lack of BAME people in the images, and the way they did not reflect the demographics of the project locations. One To One Thousand began in Autumn 2020, when Russell hosted a photoshoot funded by the prize money he received for winning the AA's Ralph Knott Memorial Prize, using it to pay the models for their time and to hire equipment.
One To One Thousand provides a bank of photographs which can be used for free by students to ensure that their architectural visualisations are representative of the communities they depict. The project seeks architectural practices to collaborate and help to expand the available bank of images. The next photoshoot is taking place on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 May 2021 in Bow, East London, and they are seeking people of colour to join the photoshoot and help expand the collection of images.
