Eleni Axioti will present a paper at the first Symposium of Urban Design History and Theory (SUDHT) that is taking place at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands on the 1–3 November 2023. The paper will be part of the Economics, Resources and Political Systems session which is chaired by Janina Gosseye and the Socio-Politics of Urban Design track.
Axioti’s paper is titled The Case of Enterprise Zones in Britain and the Transformation of Urban Design by the Global Neoliberal Market. It examines the political and economic conditions that developed during the 1980s and 1990s which altered the urban policy and production of the built environment in Britain. In particular, Axioti studies the Isle of Dogs in London's Docklands and the significance of the 36 enterprise zones that have been established in Britain since 1981.
