Following the appraisal of applications by a panel of AA staff, two Research Publications Fellowships for 2021 have now been awarded. The recipients are Roberta Marcaccio for The Hero of Doubt: Selected Writings of Ernesto Nathan Rogers (MIT Press), and John Palmesino and Ann-Sofi Rönnskog (joint application) for Territorial Agency: Climate Peace (Sternberg Press). The panel noted the high quality of scholarship already evident throughout both publications, and highlighted the contributions that each would make within fields of enquiry addressed by a number of AA units and programmes.
Marcaccio’s publication brings together a collection of writings by Italian architect, educator, critic and editor Ernesto Nathan Rogers, many of which will be translated into English for the first time. Rogers made significant contributions to the critical and theoretical modernist discourse of the 20th century, and this new publication highlights the impact of his work in the contexts of architectural culture and pedagogy.
Palmesino and Rönnskog’s publication records an extensive body of research undertaken by the authors within the remit of their independent organisation Territorial Agency, which combines architecture, analysis, advocacy and action for integrated spatial transformation of contemporary territories.
The AA Research Publications Fellowship initiative was established to promote the publication of books by AA staff, encouraging their contribution to critical, practical and theoretical discourses worldwide. The funding granted by the fellowships, two of which are offered each academic year, supports AA members of staff in the realisation of books for which research is complete and publisher contracts or letters of understanding are already in hand. It offers fellows valuable time to complete the later stages of the publishing process, helping to bring books authored by AA staff into the world.
