AA staff and alumni have been highlighted in a new publication from the Architecture Foundation, New Architects 4, which serves as a guide to the work of British architectural practices founded in the last ten years, ‘a definitive survey of an emerging generation of British talent.’ AA tutors Akil and Seth Scafe-Smith, who are part of RESOLVE Collective were featured in the book, as were tutors Fredrik Hellberg and Lara Lesmes, who lead the practice Space Popular. AA alumnus Sam Nelson was also featured, with his studio TYPE, founded with Tom Powell, Ogi Ristic and Matt Cooper in 2013, appearing in the list.
This newly published book from the Architecture Foundation was reviewed by the Observer’s architectural critic Rowan Moore. He described Space Popular’s work as ‘architecture that is close in concept and experience to installation art.’ Moore quoted Akil Scafe-Smith’s view that change in the profession is about more than just tokenistic diversity: ‘It is not just about changing the faces in architecture but changing architecture.’ Moore reflected that the book showcases the architects’ ‘talent, energy and aspirations, offering clues to an alternative future of architecture.’
