Congratulations to AA student Eunsoo Jang who was awarded the RIBA North London Architects Group prize for her project ‘Yum-Num Tower’. Eunsoo described her project as ‘a reinterpretation of Cedric Price’s work which is an unexecuted project to renew the Red Sands Forts in the Thames Estuary, England. One of the fortresses was given programs such as cooking facilities, cinema, theatre, sailing pontoon, toy depot, fish smoking room by Cedric Price. In the middle of programs, the smoke, which is a common element, is used as a medium to penetrate the tower, which is also related to new programs which I’ve reinterpreted. When I imagine the future, people consume not only ”physical food” but also “spiritual food”. On top of physical fulfillment as well. I provide an opportunity to experience both in tower 3 Yum-Num tower. To be realistic, I have used not just experimental but also possible materials and technologies. I hope it could be a journey of physical and mental treatment through Yum-Num tower.’
