It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death of AA alumnus Asa Bruno, who passed away this week following a short illness. A student of the AA from 1993–1998, Asa filled our world with the biggest smile, the loudest laugh, the tallest presence and the warmest heart. To a generation of students and staff of the AA, he was our shining light. In 2000 Asa joined Ron Arad Studio, becoming Director in 2007, and a year later cofounded Ron Arad Architects, the architectural arm of the multidisciplinary studio. Under Asa’s directorship, the practice completed many award-winning projects including the ToHA tower in Tel Aviv, the Médiacitéretail centre in Liège, the Design Museum Holon in Israel and the Watergate Hotel refurbishment in Washington DC, as well as public art commissions including the Curtain Call at the Roundhouse, London and the Vortext sculpture in Seoul. As the news of Asa’s untimely passing reached the AA community, so many have taken to social media and come together over Teams and Zoom calls to express shock and sorrow, and as one have talked about Asa’s kindness, generosity, charisma and talent – he was a unique and wonderful person who encompassed so much, encouraged and inspired so many, and was greatly loved by all who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to Asa’s wife Tamara and sons Ben and Emmanuel, and to Ron and all at Ron Arad Architects. Knowing Asa brought so much happiness to so many, and he will forever hold a special place in our hearts and in AA memory.
