David Chipperfield, an AA alumnus who graduated from the Diploma Programme in 1977, has been named the 2023 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize – one of the highest honours within the field of architecture. The Jury Citation of the Laureate highlighted the significance of Chipperfield’s contributions to the public realm through both civic and private commissions, and noted how his precise and understated design approach ‘eliminates the superfluous but is also the first step to creating structures able to last, physically and culturally’.
Selected works by David Chipperfield Architects include the River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames (1997), The Hepworth Wakefield (2011), the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin (2018), Turner Contemporary in Margate (2011) and the Inagawa Cemetery Chapel and Visitor Center in Hyogo, Japan (2017).
