Rotor, a cooperative design practice based in Brussels who assist with AA Diploma 18 alongside tutors Aude-Line Duliere and James Westcott, have received the Ultima 2023 Award. The Ultima Awards are a series of Flemish Culture Prizes given annually to leading artists, performers, companies and organisations.
Rotor was set up 20 years ago by former AA tutors Maarten Gielen, Tristen Bonvier and Lionel Devlieger. The practice develops critical positions through research and design and work on exhibitions, books, economic models and policy proposals alongside architecture and interior design work. In 2016, the group launched Rotor DC, an online depository to buy salvaged building components.
This news coincides with the current AA exhibition, Ad Hoc Baroque: Marcel Raymaeker’s architecture of reuse, by Diploma 18 and Rotor, which documents Raymaekers architectural work during the second half of the 20th century. Raymaeker worked with assemblages of salvaged building materials, antiques, scrap and the ‘natural’ byproducts of industrial processes.
The Ad Hoc Baroque exhibition is on view in the AA Front Members’ Room until Saturday 1 June.
