The University of Pennsylvania is a private, Ivy League, research university, chartered in 1755. Courses in architecture began in 1869 but it was 1890 when the first formal Architecture Department was opened. In 1920 the Architecture merged with the schools of Fine Art and Music to form the School of Fine Arts, which transformed into the Graduate School of Fine Arts in 1959. It was further re-named as the School of Design in 2003 and then in 2019 became the Stuart Weitzman School of Design
