Edinburgh College of Art was formally established in 1907, after a reorganisation of higher art education in the city. A new School of Architecture was established, with the first architecture courses taught in 1908, the first Head of the School of Architecture being John Watson. From 1968-2004, Edinburgh College of Art was affiliated with Heriot-Watt University, through whom they awarded degrees. However, since 2004, the University of Edinburgh has become the accrediting body and in 2009, Edinburgh College of Art's School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture merged with that of the University of Edinburgh to form the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA).
