The University College of Sheffield was formed through the amalgamation of three earlier educational institutions, Sheffield Medical School, the Firth College and Sheffield Technical School in 1897. It was subsequently granted a royal charter in 1905. Architecture was amongst the first subjects to be taught, the Architecture School opening to students in 1908 and initially located in the tower of Firth Court, before being relocated to the Sunday School building in Shearwood Road. From 1965 it has been housed in the top six floors of the iconic Arts Tower.
