The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia can trace its origins back to 1904 when the Treacher Technical School was founded on Weld Road (now Jalan Raja Chulan), Kuala Lumpur, aimed at preparing Technical Assistants for employment in the Federated Malay States Departments of Railways, Survey and Public Works. After the Second World War, plans were made to raise the school to the status of a Technical College, with new premises on Gurney Road (now Jalan Semarak). This was duly completed and opened in March 1955. In its initial years, the Technical College provided Diploma level courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Radio and Electrical Engineering, Land Surveying and Building, Architecture and Quality Surveying. The engineering, surveying and architecture courses were upgraded to degree level in 1960 and in 1971 the College name was changed to Institut Teknologi Kebangsaan and the following year was granted university status, changing its name, once more, to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. After further expansion, a new campus was created in Skudai, Johor, opening in 1985.
