The Ryerson Institute of Technology was established in Toronto, Canada, in 1948, with 250 students comprising its inaugural cohort. Initially the Institute only offered vocational and two-year training courses but by the early 1950s it was offering three-year Diploma courses. Following a re-organisation in 1964 the name 'Ryerson Polytechnical Institute' was adopted and limited degree-granting powers were gained during the 1970s. Recognition as a university in 1993 led to it being re-named 'Ryerson Polytechnic University' and subsequently, in 2002, 'Ryerson University'. Since 2022 the name of 'Toronto Metropolitan University' has been adopted.
