Singapore Polytechnic was established in 1954, with its initial campus, at Prince Edward Road, off Shenton Way, formally opening in 1959. Architecture formed part of one of the earliest departments and the RIBA granted their Diploma course recognition up to level of Part I in 1968. The following year, the department transferred to the University of Singapore. In 1978 the original Polytechnic campus was vacated and the current Dover Road campus developed. Today the Singapore Polytechnic School of Architecture & the Built Environment (ABE) offers a three-year Diploma course.
