
The University of Hong Kong was founded in 1912, initially comprising the Faculties of Arts, Engineering, Medicine and Science. The Department of Architecture was formed in 1950, under inaugural Dean, Prof. Raymond Gordon Brown (previously Head at the Architectural Association, London, 1945-48), providing a five-year B.Arch degree qualification. Under Dean Wallace Gerard Gregory a the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture was formed, following amalgamation. Three years later the BArch degree was granted official recognition by the Royal Institute of British Architects. Postgraduate study provision was added in the late 1960s, with the first Architecture PhD being awarded in 1969.
