Norwood Technical College was originally known as the Norwood Institute, when it was founded in 1858. In 1892 the trustees of the Institute transferred the building's lease to the Technical Education Board and the the new name of 'Norwood Technical Institute' was adopted. At this stage, commerce and domestic economy were the primary subjects taught. In 1904 the London County Council Education Committee took control and the subject areas were greatly expanded, with the name again changing, in 1948, to the 'Norwood Technical College.' In the 1970s the college merged to form the South London College and was subsequently merged again creating Lambeth College in 1992 - today part of South Bank Colleges.
