The origins of the University of Mosul are in the creation of a College of Medicine in 1959, closely followed by colleges for Engineering, Science, Agriculture, and the Arts - these were united in 1967 with the formal establishment of the university. It suffered major destruction during the ISIS occupation, from 2014-2017, but remains the second largest educational institute in Iraq, behind the University of Baghdad.
