The origins of Newcastle University begin with the foundation of Armstrong College in 1871, however it's architecture school grew out the Northern Architectural Association (est. 1958), and formed part of King's College, Newcastle, affiliated to Durham University, from 1937. Following an Act of Parliament, Kings' College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963. The Architecture School celebrated its centenary in 2000 and includes amongst it most famous alumni, the Matrix feminist collective, Terry Farrell, Alison and Peter Smithson and Jo Noero.
