The Royal College of Art (RCA) was founded in 1837, its original name being the Government School of Design. By 1863 it was part of the South Kensington Museum (now V&A) and was entitled the National Art Training School. A further name change, to 'Royal College of Art', took place in 1896 and in 1967 it gained its Royal Charter allowing it to award its own degrees. The RCA was housed in the Henry Cole building at the V&A Museum between 1896-1967, moving into the Darwin Building, adjacent to the Royal Albert Hall following the building's completion in 1963.
