Although architecture had been taught as far back as the 1890s, a formal Department of Architecture was only opened in 1916, within the School of Fine Arts. 1963 the faculty moved to the new, Paul Rudolph designed, Yale Art and Architecture Building, with Architecture becoming a separate, graduate School in 1972.
