Albert Kench was born in 1923 in the Manchester region of the UK. By aged 16 he was apprenticed as a draughtsman, passing the RIBA qualifying exam in 1949. He then travelled to Kenya where, in October 1953, he took up the post of Assistant Architect within the Construction Section of the Public Works Department, Nairobi. He was shortly promoted to the position of Architect and in 1961 is recorded as having enrolled on the Department of Tropical Architecture post-graduate course at the Architectural Association, London. It is not known whether Kench returned to Kenya following his graduation but by the mid-1960s he appears to have been living in Hampshire.
