Lucio Santana de Miranda was born into one of the oldest Catholic families in Loutolim, Goa. It is not known where he qualified as an architect but in 1958-59 he is recorded as living in London and studying on the Architectural Association’s six-month, post-graduate course within the Department of Tropical Architecture. Upon graduation with a Certificate in Tropical Architecture, Miranda remained in London for a several years, getting married in 1961 before returning to Goa, where he was recorded as living in Mapusa by 1969. Miranda had an interesting career, combining renown as an architect with some success as a musician, singing and playing guitar in the traditional Portuguese Fado style. He was a childhood friend and mentor to the Goan popstar, Remo Fernandes, and performed alongside celebrities including the Valadares sisters. His architectural output included private villas and seaside resorts, including the Sun Village Resort and Hotel Colonia Santa Maria, both near Baga Beach, Calangute. His Our Lady of the Rosary chapel at Siridao (1973) is perhaps his finest work.
