The Mapua Institute of Technology (now Mapua University), Manilla, was founded in 1925 by Tomas B Mapua and Gonzalo T. Vales, the former being the first registered Filipino architect and civil engineer. The Institute was the first to provide a Bachelor's degree in Architecture in the Philippines. Initially a private architecture and engineering school, the Institute was sold by the Mapua family in 2000 to the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC) and in 2017 the institute was granted university status, becoming 'Mapua University'.
