Founded in 1853, the University of Melbourne is the second oldest university in Australia. Architecture was first taught as a part of the Engineering Certificate Course, from 1860. A part-time Lecturer in Architecture was first employed in 1877 and by 1919 the Melbourne University Architectural Atelier (MUAA) had been established within the university, providing a three-year postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Design. In 1927 a Bachelor's degree in Architecture was started and Architecture established as a standalone Faculty in 1931.
