The University of Cape Town can trace its roots back 1829 and the founding of the 'South African College', a high school for young men. It attained full university status in 1918 and can be considered the oldest university in South Africa (and also the oldest in Sub-Saharan Africa still in continuous operation). Architecture was first established as a programme in 1922, with a course organised to prepare students for the RIBA examinations, with the Architecture School being formally established in 1937. A re-organisation in the late 1950s resulted in the Architecture School moving to the Centlivres building, its current home.
