The University of Rangoon was founded in 1920, when the University College and Judson College were merged. Other name changes have taken place since, with the The university was also renamed the Rangoon Arts and Sciences University in 1964, following the separation of a number of faculties. In 1989 it was renamed the University of Yangon. The Department of Architecture was founded in 1954, and operated a four-year Degree course, providing a BArch, under the Faculty of Engineering. The initial five Architecture graduates qualified in April 1958, however six years later, in 1964, the Architecture department was transferred tto Rangoon Institute of Technology at Gyogone, Insein (now Yangon Technological University).
