Anthony Evans was born in 1938, in Luton, Bedfordshire and was educated at St. George’s School, Harpenden, and at Luton Technical College. By the time he enrolled on the five-year Diploma course at the Architectural Association (AA), London, in 1957, he had travelled extensively, having visited New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, Nice and Cannes. He had also acquired experience, working in the Architect’s Office of Luton Borough Council, from 1956. During his studies, Evans also appears to have worked with ‘Design Alliance’, a practice based in Highgate, London, made up of other AA graduates, including earlier Tropical Department alumni, Roy Case. In 1961, he and his Design Alliance associates are recorded as having been awarded third prize in a national competition for the design of government offices and a conference centre, at Broad Sanctuary, Westminster. For his final year of Diploma, Evans took the option of studying with the AA’s Department of Tropical Studies and produced, as his final thesis, a project for government buildings in Bechuanalanda (now Botswana). Upon graduation, he appears to have continued working as a partner for ‘Design Alliance’ and subsequently moved into the field of property development, holding directorships in a number of related companies, including Anthony Evans & Co. Ltd. and Sparrows Herne Development Ltd.
