Ved. K. Varma was born in the Arusha Region of Tanzania in 1936 and was educated at the University of Bombay, where he received a B.Arch in 1962. Two years later, he was recorded as enrolled on the 1964-65 postgraduate course run by the Architectural Association’s Department of Tropical Studies, in London. Varma was registered on the Department’s ‘General Course’ and was awarded the AA Diploma in Tropical Studies in March 1965. He then took a Diploma in Town Planning at the Aston University, Birmingham, UK. In late 1970 he moved to the US and applied for naturalisation, registering as an architect in Denver, Colorado, in 1976.
