AA tutor and Visiting School Sydney co-leader Oskar Johanson’s Castaway Cay is now on show at the Het Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam, as part of the Architecture of Staged Realities exhibition. Curated by Saskia van Stein, Architecture of Staged Realities aims to examine the influence of Walt Disney’s films and their relationship with today’s built environment and sense of identity.
Johanson’s piece focuses on The Walt Disney Company’s cruise ship subsidiary, Disney Cruise Line, and the private island resort Disney operates in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay. His research gives an overview of the company’s cruise operations through several panels, making use of remotely-sensed and maritime administrative data. These panels are complemented by physical artefacts plucked from aboard the cruise ships as well as a playable archive containing digital models of Disney Cruise Line vessel interiors.
The exhibition is open at the Het Nieuwe Institut, Rotterdam until 27 March 2022. Read more here.
