One of India's premier architectural education institutions, the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art, Mumbai, was founded in 1857 and moved to its own buildings in 1878. In 1896 classes in draughtsmanship established and were to become the foundation for the first formal architecture course in 1900, run by John Begg. In 1913 the course underwent a major re-organisation and Robert Cable was appointed the first Professor of Architecture. Further modifications took place in 1936, with the course transformed into a full-time, 5 year qualification. V. S. Adurkar was the first Indian Head of School to be appointed (1943). In 1952, the Architecture course was affiliated with the University of Bombay and in 1958, the School was divided into the Sir J.J. College of Architecture, the Sir J.J. School of Art and the Sir J.J. School of Applied Art.
