Frank William Smith was born in Essex, UK, in 1924. He joined the Fiji Public Works Department in 1947 and held the position of Government Architect since 1959. From 1962-63 he attended the postgraduate course run by the Architectural Association’s (AA) Department of Tropical Architecture, in London. Two of his student projects, designs for a school in Lagos and for low cost housing in Pulo Mas, Djakarta (both produced jointly with fellow classmates), were published in the AA Journal of April 1963. Details of his subsequent career are not yet known to us but a Frank W. Smith is recorded in the RIBA Journal of 1970 as living in Auckland, New Zealand, having just retired as a government architect in Fiji.
