Kamil Eduard Kvapil was born on 18 April 1935 in the Kolin district of Czechoslovakia. He completed his secondary school education in London at the William Ellis School between 1952–1953, before beginning higher education at the Hammersmith School of Art & Building in 1954. After three years of architectural studies, Kvapil entered into professional practice and worked for a number of London offices for the following seven years; first at Gordon & Gordon (1958–1959), then Playne & Lacey (1959–1962), Booty, Edwards & Partners (1962–1964) and Mayorcas & Guest (1964-1965). He joined the Architectural Association (AA) in September 1965, entering into the Third Year and subsequently joining the Department of Tropical Architecture in his Fifth Year, from 1967-68, with tutors describing him as “a gifted designer, hard-working and thorough.” There are few available sources that shed light on Kvapil’s professional career following his graduation from the AA, however it is evident that he eventually returned to Czechoslovakia and practiced in Prague, including at the architectural firm Studio Arx. One of the few projects attributed to him is a 1992 urban plan for the town of Hostivice, designed in collaboration with architect Jaroslav Ouřecký.
