Alfredo Tungpalan is recorded as a Philippine student enrolled in the Architectural Association Department of Tropical Architecture course for 1958-1959. Shortly after graduating he returned to the Philippines, living in Quezon City by 1961. The influence of the Tropical Architecture course is perhaps visible in a detailed article Tungpalan published in the Philippine Architecture & Building Journal (1962), examining data on sun shading for buildings– a key aspect of the AA curriculum. Tungpalan was active in the Association of Philippine Government Architects (APGA), implying his employment was within this realm. His standing was such that in 1973 he was on the board of negotiators for the merger of APGA, the Philippine Institute of Architects and the League of Philippine Architects to form the United Architects of the Philippines, of which he was the first Treasurer in 1975.
