Alex Josephides was born in Larnarca, Cyprus in 1918. It is not known to us where he qualified as an architect but he was elected an Associate of the RIBA in 1950, when living in Nicosia, Cyprus. By 1959 he was working as a ‘Housing Architect’ within the Department of Town Planning and Housing, Cyprus. In 1961-62 Josephides is recorded as having enrolled on the 1961-62 postgraduate course run by the Architectural Association Department of Tropical Studies, London. He was funded by the UK War Office, based at Chessington - presumably Josephides’ employer by that time. His attendance on the course was on a ‘lectures only’ basis, meaning that he was not entitled to receive a Certificate in Tropical Studies. Following the completion of the AA course, Josephides continued in public service, working as an Architect for the Department of the Environment in the late 1960s, and being awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 1974 for his work as Superintending Architect at the Department’s Property Services Agency.
